African thermal correction

Calculation4 min readUpdated: 2025-06

In Africa, solar panels frequently operate at ambient temperatures of 35–45°C. Every degree above 25°C (STC reference temperature) loses approximately 0.4% of power on a monocrystalline panel.

T_cell = T_ambient + 25

If wind speed > 5 m/s → T_cell -= 5 (wind cooling effect)

Thermal_loss = (T_cell - 25) × 0.004

0.4% loss per °C above 25°C · result between 0 and 1

P_final = P_theoretical ÷ (1 - Thermal_loss)

P_theoretical = E_req ÷ PSH · PSH = peak sun hours

SolarDim Pro applies this correction automatically. An engineer calculating without thermal correction will undersize the PV array by 10–15% in Sahelian cities.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing the PV array with a fixed PR (0.80) without adjusting for site temperature
  • Ignoring the wind-cooling effect, which overestimates thermal loss
  • Using average annual ambient temperature instead of peak (hot season) temperature
